Day 245: Psalm 60, Proverbs 9:1-3, Revelations 1, Ecclesiastes 5-6
Shine Forth For God
Believers are the church. And in Revelation 1:20, it is stated that the 7 lampstands are the 7 churches. The word "lampstand" first appeared in the Bible in Exodus 25:31, where God gave very detailed instructions how the lampstand was to be made and placed in the tabernacle of the Israelites. The lampstand was to be made of pure gold, hammered out to the perfect accuracy of God’s decree (Exodus 25:31). Gold is often spoken of in terms of being “tested by fire”. It means as a church, we are to be tested and refined to come out to be true people of God. In the tabernacle, the lampstand was to be placed in the Holy Place (Hebrews 9:2) and to be tended by priests so that its light never went out. The lampstand was to give forth light day and night (Exodus 27:20–21) and the lampstand’s being the only source of light in the Tabernacle, its light directly pointed to God. The church, i.e. the believers are to shine forth for Jesus and spread the light of the Gospel to point Jesus Christ as the Light of the world (John 8:12, 9:5). Today, as we go to church, let us remind one another to be the faithful lampstands as we await eagerly for the return of our dear Lord Jesus which may be very soon, as seen from yesterday's devotion.
