Day 41: Beware of the Sin of Indifference
Then He began to rebuke the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent: “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.”
Matthew 11:20-24 NKJV

When Jesus said "Woe", He actually pronounced a direct judgment against these 3 cities. What went wrong? The short answer was they did not repent when Jesus' mighty works had been done (verse 20). Chorazin and Bethsaida situated in Galilee and both had witnessed Jesus'ministry firsthand. Capernaum in fact was called "Jesus own city" (Matthew 9:1). It was the sin of the people who knew their privileges but rejected them. To these cities, privileges were given which never came to Tyre and Sidon or Sodom and Gomorrah. So, when a man who had the privilege of knowing what was right and yet did wrong, that man would be justly condemned. It was also the sin of indifference. These cities neither persecuted Jesus nor praised Him. They simply neglected Him. Breach of duty in negligence is in the law of tort. God viewed it so seriously that He said He would vomit out the church that was neither cold nor hot (Revelation 3:16). Similarly, the book of James, verse 17 says, "Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin. https://twitter.com/EstherOngHC (please click to view a visual)
